Floating Aquatic Plants

These plants float on the surface of the pond often with their roots anchored to the bottom of the pond. Some floaters, like duckweed, have roots that dangle in the water. Click on any of the plants below to see drawings, pictures and to learn more about the plant and its control.

Duckweed -- Tiny, free-floating plant with single dangling root

Spatterdock -- Large, floating, round or heart-shaped leaf with yellowish flowers

Water Primrose -- 3-inch, oval or lance-shaped leaves in shallow water, yellow flowers

Watershield -- Floating eliptical leaves, reddish underneath with slimy coating, reddish flowers

Water Lily -- Large, round, floating leaves that are split at the center, large white or pinkish flower

Watermeal -- Very small floating plant that resembles green seeds
